Self Description is a written reflection exercise. Prepare by understanding your experiences, feedback and areas for improvement, and expressing them honestly in your own words.

What to expect
The Army’s public SSB film describes a written self-description exercise organised under five headings. Follow the headings and instructions actually supplied at your board. The reflection prompts below are preparation aids and are not presented as the official heading sheet.

Collect evidence from everyday life
Before drafting, think about responsibilities you have held, feedback you have received and changes you have made. Concrete examples make reflection more useful than a list of adjectives. Include ordinary experiences from school, college, work, family or community activities.

Five original reflection prompts
Write private notes first. You do not need to publish personal information to practise.
- What responsibility have you handled consistently, and what did it involve?
- What feedback have you heard from people who know you well?
- Which recent mistake changed how you approach a task?
- Where do you still need help or practice?
- What specific improvement are you working on, and what have you done about it?

Move from labels to examples
“I am responsible” is a claim. A brief description of a responsibility and how you met it gives the reader something concrete. Likewise, naming an area for improvement is more useful when you explain the action you are taking. Use your own examples; do not borrow an achievement from a sample paragraph.

Keep reflection consistent with lived experience
Revisit your notes periodically and check them against what you actually do. Seek candid feedback from someone who knows you well. Preparation is a chance to improve habits as well as writing; it is not a reason to invent a polished alternative biography.
