Compare IMA, INA, AFA and OTA

Read the academy name as a career choice as well as an examination preference. IMA and OTA lead into Army officer training, INA into Navy training and AFA into Air Force training. Compare the commission, course and eligibility provisions in the notice before ranking preferences. Passing a paper combination does not make every academy available to you.

• IMA: investigate the Army route, its degree requirement and notified personal eligibility conditions.
• INA: check the precise engineering qualification provision and Navy service expectations.
• AFA: check education and school-subject conditions as well as the Air Force selection requirements.
• OTA: examine the notified Short Service Commission course and the English-plus-General-Knowledge written route.

Build a CDS syllabus checklist

Keep the UPSC syllabus beside your paper review. For English, separate comprehension, grammar and vocabulary difficulties. For General Knowledge, group topics such as history, geography, science and current events. Where Elementary Mathematics applies, organise arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, mensuration and statistics. Use this as a checklist to study systematically, not as a prediction of the next paper.

• Mark each topic as unfamiliar, learning, practising or ready for timed review.
• Connect every practice error to a topic and an action.
• Revisit an older topic each week so earlier learning is retained.

Move from the written result to SSB or AFSB

Read the result notice and follow the service-specific registration and call-up instructions. Keep application details, academic records and contact information ready. While waiting, review your projects, employment, responsibilities and reasons for choosing the service. Use real examples in interview preparation and practise listening as well as speaking during group discussion. For an Air Force preference, familiarise yourself with the IAF’s published AFSB process and any additional applicable requirements.

Turn academy preferences into a practical CDS plan

Separate two decisions: whether a notified academy route fits your qualifications, and how to prepare for its papers. Write down your intended academy preferences before assembling study material. Then compare your present performance paper by paper so that a strong English score does not hide weak General Knowledge or an unprepared Mathematics paper where applicable.

• Keep a route checklist alongside your timetable: academy preference, relevant education documents, application requirements and evidence deadlines.
• Plan study around university or work responsibilities with specific weekly outputs, not only hours.
• If considering more than one route, identify the overlapping preparation and the additional work each requires.

Review English, General Knowledge and Mathematics differently

One revision method will not solve every paper. For English, explain why the chosen option fits the sentence or passage. For General Knowledge, connect a missed fact to its wider topic and revisit it later. For Mathematics, write the method and identify the point where your reasoning or calculation failed. Use UPSC previous papers as the reference material rather than relying only on mixed online quizzes.

• English: keep examples of recurring grammar or comprehension mistakes, not an unmanageable list of isolated rules.
• General Knowledge: organise revision by topic and check disputed facts against reliable sources.
• Mathematics where applicable: practise selecting an efficient method, then build timed accuracy.
• Maintain an error log and reattempt a small selection before adding new material.

Prepare to explain your graduation and responsibilities at SSB

A graduate candidate has experiences worth examining: academic choices, projects, teamwork, setbacks, employment and responsibilities outside college. Reflect on those experiences rather than constructing a polished personality. Be ready to explain decisions, acknowledge limitations and describe improvements with real examples.

• Review one project in depth: your contribution, difficulty, decision and outcome.
• Understand why the academy and service you prefer suit your interests.
• For repeat attempts, identify what you can improve without claiming to know why a board did not recommend you.

Begin with the academy outcome. Graduates considering IMA, INA, AFA or OTA should compare the current educational conditions, date-of-birth window, marital-status provisions and notified course availability before choosing preferences.

• Match your qualification to the exact INA education wording in the current notice rather than an older eligibility summary.
• Check the AFA education conditions, including the relevant Physics and Mathematics history or engineering qualification.
• Treat OTA as a distinct course and written-paper route, not simply an easier version of CDS.

What to expect on examination day

Your academy choices determine whether you sit two papers or three under the current UPSC scheme. Confirm the timetable, venue instructions and permitted materials from UPSC, then rehearse the same paper sequence and duration in practice.

• IMA, INA and AFA candidates prepare for English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics.
• OTA candidates prepare for English and General Knowledge under the current scheme.

Common mistakes and quick answers

Candidates often compare CDS as though every academy has the same qualification and papers. Another common error is quoting an old age range or cut-off without naming the cycle and course.

• Are CDS and CDSE the same examination? CDSE is a common abbreviation for the Combined Defence Services Examination, widely called CDS.
• Is Elementary Mathematics taken for OTA? Not under the current UPSC written scheme.
• Does a historical cut-off predict the next one? No. Use released cut-offs only as historical records.
